In a study conducted to test the efficacy and safety of the drug in CD patients, it was found that there was no difference between metronidazole and placebo-treated patients although a positive trend in favor of metronidazole was observed in patients with Crohn’s colitis. 50 In the National Cooperative Swedish Study, metronidazole was compared with sulfasalazine as a primary treatment for CD.
