This has been particularly true of optical readouts, which have been widely used in high-throughput screening, but now there is an increasing trend to translate assays from cell monolayers to “more realistic” 3D cell and tissue cultures, to transparent live organisms that are amenable to genetic manipulation such as drosophila and zebrafish, and to small mammals.
