However, when species were quantified by basal area and surface area was used as a covariate, location on or off mounds was a highly significant predictor of variation in community composition for all stems ( Table 2d ; Figure 4 ) and for juvenile stems alone ( Table 2e ; Figure 5 ), but not for adult stems ( Table 2f ).
