A meta-analysis of eight studies examining the impact of chlorhexidine-impregnated sponge dressings on vascular and epidural catheter infection demonstrated a significant reduction in catheter and exit-site colonization with a possible trend toward decreased CLABSI rates. 51 A large randomized, controlled trial consisting of 3778 catheter episodes was later carried out in seven ICUs in France to further evaluate this question.
