These disparate effects of 1,25(OH) 2 D 3 on prostate tumor biology appear to be dictated predominantly by the androgen status of the mice [ 16 ] or the level of androgen in the culture medium [ 17 , 29 ], suggesting that in prostate cancer, there may be significant cross talk between androgen-mediated growth and vitamin D 3 -mediated cell cycle arrest and differentiation which may influence tumor initiation and progression, and impact tumor growth and affect subsequent therapeutic intervention [ 17 ].
