Although in some cases, the number of reads mapping to the putative site of cleavage was low in comparison to the total number of reads mapped elsewhere across the transcript, if non-miR-directed reads are assumed to be randomly distributed across the mRNA, for most of the examples shown, the reads that map to putative miR cleavage sites are highly significant ( Supplementary Figure S1a ).
