Although the exact consequence of this association remains unknown, the fact that VDBP has immunomodulatory characteristics and is responsible for transport of vitamin D metabolites supports, in theory, a model whereby the impact of reduced serum levels may be significant enough to lend itself, directly or indirectly, to the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells in the disease.
