Levels of HIV-risk related measures did not significantly differ between study arms at baseline; although median episodes of unprotected sex with commercial partners in the preceding 6 months were somewhat higher at intervention beer halls (median 1.5, IQR 0.1–2.8) compared to controls (median 0.2, IQR 0–0.5), a difference that achieved borderline significance ( P = 0.10).
