Systematic reviews of more than 30 controlled studies of SDD provide compelling evidence of reductions in VAP of >50% [ 6 ] versus marginally significant reductions of <20% with non-antibiotic methods of prevention such as those based on the management of gastric pH [ 7 ], tracheal suction [ 8 ], or humidification [ 9 ].
