In this trial, a highly significant survival advantage was found for high-dose melphalan therapy, with a prolongation of the median survival from 44 to 62 months. 1 NMSG #7/98 From January 1998 until June 2000, 452 patients <65 years were registered in a similar trial evaluating high-dose melphalan with autologous stem cell support, and using a matched historical patient group as control.
