Due to the numerical preponderance of ORNs and because odor-induced signals have a very stereotypical time course and do not show spontaneous activity or inhibitory responses (the hallmark of LNs and PNs, see below), these recordings are thought to emphasize presynaptic calcium variations from ORNs (Galizia et al., 1998 ; Sachse and Galizia, 2003 ), with a possibly significant contribution from glial cells surrounding each glomerulus (Galizia and Vetter, 2004 ).
