On the other hand, it should be considered that in chronic painful conditions, especially neuropathic injuries such as in shingles, post-herpetic and trigeminal neuralgia, and in more subchronic hypersensitivies such as following burn injury [ 130 , 131 ] or even sunburn [ 28 , 132 ], the phenotypic sensory change is such that mild tactile stimulation and stroking can now be perceived as highly painful in the affected dermatome, and accordingly there may be significant anti-allodynic benefit to P2X3 antagonism, with the potential even for topical application.
