Although the primary outcome measure of nonfatal MI and fatal CHD failed to reach significance (HR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.79–1.02; P = 0.105), those on the amlodipine-based regimen had significantly lower rates of cardiovascular mortality (HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.66–0.89; P = 0.001) and total coronary events and procedures (HR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.78–0.90; P < 0.0001) than those on the atenolol-based regimen.
