The same Authors also found a highly significant inverse relationship between the presence of a CRISPR- cas locus and acquired antibiotic resistance in E. faecalis and similarly in additional 8 genomes, suggesting that antibiotic use inadvertently selects for enterococcal strains with compromised genome defense (Palmer and Gilmore, 2010 ).
