In the light of our findings here, it may be significant that attempts to replace the P. berghei pbsub1 gene with the pfsub1 gene by targeted homologous recombination have consistently failed (Tewari, Yeoh, Billker and Blackman, unpublished data), consistent with the notion that the two orthologues are not functionally interchangeable due to their distinct substrate preferences.
