Our data strongly suggest that aging effects operate not at the level of cortex but on the integrated thalamo-cortical unit, and the highly significant relationship between the volume of thalamo-frontal projections and executive function as assessed by the Stroop test ( MacLeod, 1991 ), suggests that alterations in the integrity of the thalamo-frontal unit is an important factor in the cognitive decline associated with aging.
