Previous analysis of these data have shown several important prescribing trends in the treatment of bipolar depression from 1994 until 2009: Antidepressants are prescribed in almost 80% of all in-patients, thus being by far the most important class of psychotropic drugs prescribed for bipolar depression; antipsychotics in about 60% with increasing trend, especially for quetiapine; anticonvulsants in about 50%, mostly valproic acid and lamotrigine and lithium in about 35% with a decreasing trend.
