While no single risk factor explains a sufficient variance to be used individually as a basis for prevention, simulation studies in analytical epidemiology show that highly significant decreases in population incidence might be obtained by targeting simultaneously multiple high-risk factors. 2 3 Exposure to many of these risk factors occurs in middle age, for example, hypertension and diabetes, suggesting that maximal impact is likely to be obtained by targeting middle-age populations with a high risk of a later-life dementia.
