There was a highly significant positive and linear relationship between the Planktothrix biovolume quantified by 16S rDNA and the biovolume as determined by microscopic counting, y = -0.289 + 0.737 x , n = 27, R 2 = 0.9, P < 0.001, where x is the average log 10 biovolume (mm 3 L -1 ) per year as determined by 16S rDNA and y is the average log 10 biovolume as determined by microscopic counting (Figure S1A in Additional file 1 ).
