A GLMM analysis of stain distribution showed that when variables representing colonisation by beetles and other arthropods were entered first into the model, ahead of caging and segment effects, there was still a highly significant effect of segment position on stain intensity, but only a weak and equivocal remaining influence of the caging effect ( Figure 3 , Table 1d , Table 2d ).
