Our data, demonstrating an association of C-peptide levels with markers of endothelial activation such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin, as well as a highly significant association with levels of LpPLA 2 , a novel marker of arteriosclerosis, raise the question if C-peptide could potentially also directly influence atherogenesis in humans, but our data cannot prove a causal relationship.
