As expected, analysis of variance of the trait revealed highly significant main effects of germplasm type (landraces, old cultivars and elite cultivars), geographic origin, ear type, and seasonal growth habit (Additional file 1 : Table S1), but no significant interactions were detected between these classifications (data not shown).
