However, the relative level of the signal compared with the background noise (SNR) or the signal excess above masked hearing thresholds may be significant predictors of behavioural response, and may under certain conditions (such as when the receiver is at greater distances from the source and received levels are close to background noise) be a better predictor than received sound pressure level.
