In the first reported comparative study of nifedipine GITS, a hydrophilic matrix tablet of nifedipine based on hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as the gel-forming agent was shown to have a highly significant ( P < 0.001) increase in AUC and C max with food relative to the fasting state after a single dose. 21 Similar discrepancies have been seen in other comparative studies.
