The presence of associated SNPs in functionally related genes interacting in gene regulatory networks and biological pathways gives a degree of confidence that associations are potentially genuine even if none of the SNPs individually is highly significant. 5 In addition, the actions of SNP-containing genes may be mediated by other genes not identified by GWAS.
