Analyses of the variability of reaction time (measured as a subject's standard deviation of reaction time) revealed a marginally significant main effect of timbre [ F (3,81) = 2.20, p <0.1]; post-hoc tests determined that response times were marginally more variable during flute-tone discrimination than during pure-tone discrimination ( Table 2 ; p <0.08); no other significant differences were found.
