Known prognostic factors, such as high serum LDH (an independent and highly significant predictor of survival in advanced melanoma) ( Balch et al , 2003 ; Bedikian et al , 2008 ; Neuman et al , 2008 ), ECOG PS or the presence of visceral metastases, were not taken into account owing to the small number of patients planned to be included in this small phase I–II study.
