Several other research studies have pointed to the fact that CD4 counts are lower among coinfected patients as compared to HIV infected alone and severe immune suppression is seen in those with CD4 count below 200 cells/μL.[ 22 , 23 ] TB therapy is seen to have a positive influence on CD4 counts,[ 24 ] and the DOTS initiative has been demonstrated to prevent and even reverse the emergence of MDR-TB.[ 25 ] It is worth noting that an increasing trend in the proportion of HIV–TB cases in this population from 10.6% in 2008 to 31.3% in June 2012 until when data were included in this study.
