This notion is supported by the highly significant correlation between DR and development of preclinical morphological changes of DN in the majority of type I diabetic patients. 66 In addition, the incidence of DR is increased dramatically 5 years before the onset of proteinuria in type1 diabetes. 67 Thus, presumably there is a shared susceptibility background for the pathobiology of both DR and DN.
