Some common assertions regarding the lack of energy balance closure include the following, (a) that the source areas of the energy balance components do not match and/or the energy balance neglects components which may be significant such as heat storage and/or advection and (b) that the eddy covariance method suffers from “missing” low/high frequency eddy structures due to the temporal and spatial scale of the turbulent eddies [ 1 , 2 ].
