Three other Indian studies by Chaudhary et al ., Dutta et al ., and Maheshwari et al ., also found blood transfusions as an independent risk factors.[ 2 , 16 , 17 ] In a western study, Hessel et al ., showed that blood transfusion volume and iron load by transfusions are associated with the risk of occurrence of ROP in infants with a birth weight of <1250 g.[ 18 ] Although, the exact role of blood transfusion in ROP is thus not clear in Indian and western literature, with an apparent trend of more ROP with the association of blood transfusion, the nurseries all over the world are now using blood in a restricted manner.
