The observed hyperexpression by dcSSc fibroblasts, before DEP treatment, of metalloproteinase 2, 7, 9, and 12 genes, and their reaction with a further highly significant increase in metalloproteinases 2, 7, and 9 gene expression in response to DEP particles, can be considered as the expression of a tentative, put in place by these cells, to counteract the excessive collagen production in response to inflammatory stimuli.
