For him, the positive association between brown eyes and excitable reactions to pain was due to the fact that “members of the Jewish race, in whom these physical features was present” were notorious for their “lowered [pain] threshold.” Bizarrely, he petitioned readers to investigate whether “red-haired Jews” also had brown eyes, implying that this might be significant in evaluating their degree of pain-sensitivity (Wauchope 1959, 1098).
