1 , 11 , 12 There are few estimates of the prevalence and distribution of pathogens that cause GIT illnesses, which indicate there may be significant differences in the prevalence of certain pathogens in circulation in developing and developed settings. 13-15 Determining the prevalence of pathogens on a regional basis will assist in the development of appropriately targeted prevention and control strategies, identify gaps in surveillance and provide support for the strengthening of laboratory diagnostic capacity at the regional level.
