The incidence of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) has presented an increasing trend over the last few decades. 1 ) SCI involves an acute phase of primary injury that causes immediate cell damage and vascular disruption followed by a phase of delayed secondary injury that may last from hours to weeks. 2 ) The primary injury usually involves direct compression of the spinal cord as a result of dislocation of the spinal vertebral motion segments or displaced bone fragments.
