Importantly, a focus on mechanisms can advance existing conversation from one focused on “gene-hunting,” with a goal of accumulating highly significant polymorphisms regardless of their functional importance (or “behavior hunting” in the case of candidate genes, where one seeks to accumulate a list of behaviors regardless of their interdependence), to one focused on mechanism and the phenotype of interest.
