The expression of several components of the retinoid cascade is reduced in the hippocampus and brainstem of the SAMP8 mouse including a highly significant reduction in the expression of RARα in the hippocampus, suggesting that a reduction in vitamin A signalling may be responsible in part for the decline in sleep observed in this model.
