10 Retrospective surveys of pre-war England also found that under-nourishment was a highly significant predisposing factor 11 While work undertaken on the period of the Second World War demonstrated that nutritional deficiency during the war was linked to tuberculosis mortality increases in Belgium, France and the Netherlands and also, but to a lesser extent, in Italy, Spain and Hungary 12 – a finding recently later corroborated by the work of George Comstock, Massimo Livi Bacci, and Matthew Smallman-Raynor and Andrew Cliff. 13 Again, as we will show, we find that contemporary health professionals in interwar England were well aware of this link.
