Among the biological functions that showed highly significant (P < 0.00001) changes in fast muscle in response to exercise were muscle development, myogenesis, angiogenesis, cell cycle progression, mitosis, cytoskeleton organization, lipid oxidation, lipid synthesis and organismal growth (Additional file 2 : Table S2), with 143, 59, 230, 408, 172, 424, 81, 240 and 201 differentially expressed genes, respectively.
