A similar plot for CTC indicated that the number of heterotrophic prokaryotic cells with high respiration rates was higher in the SML than at the surface, as most values were above the 1:1 ratio (Figure 2B ), Overall, there were more respiring prokaryotic cells at the SML, while they produced more in surface waters, both trends being highly significant (Table 2 ).
