While tobacco and alcohol are recognized as being primary etiologic factors for oral squamous carcinogenesis, there is a worrying trend in the incidence of oral cancer in patients who have never used these agents ( 97 ), raising the possibility that other factors may have a major role in tumor progression in these subjects.
