This trial demonstrated that the use of sunitinib in treatment-naïve patients with metastatic clear-cell RCC resulted in significant improvements in median progression-free survival (PFS; 11 vs 5 months; P <0.001) and objective response rate (ORR; 47% vs 12% P <0.001) compared with IFN- α , while overall survival (OS) was of borderline significance (26.4 vs 21.8 months; P =0.051); the study had not been designed to demonstrate any OS benefit ( Motzer et al , 2009 ).
