Their presence in the atmosphere is widely assumed to derive solely from these anthropogenic sources 11 – the possibility that there may be significant biogenic sources of these compounds to the atmosphere has not previously been considered in regional and global trace gas emissions models or in modeled estimates of the occurrence of secondary organic aerosol in the atmosphere 12 , 13 .
