Thus, the Heaviness of Smoking Index (HSI) was only of borderline significance in preliminary analysis [ 37 ] and concerns arose that the true importance of being dependent might be missed if the HSI was used to represent dependence so instead a dichotomous variable was used: clients who smoked >30 cigarettes per day or who smoked within five minutes of waking were coded as dependent and contrasted with all other clients.
