Subsequently, two small crossover studies in about 40 patients showed a rise in 2 h glucose within 4 weeks of treatment with bendroflumethiazide 5 mg or HCTZ 50 mg, with a highly significant difference from the 2 h glucose during 4 weeks of treatment with amiloride 20 mg ( figures 1 and 2 ). 12 PATHWAY-3 will test whether the apparent superiority of amiloride, in protecting glucose tolerance, is maintained over 6 months of treatment, and translates into measurable differences in HbA1c.
