Due to highly significant correlations between all ACE types, and consistent with the ACE study methodology elsewhere, 9 , 10 a count of how many categories of ACE each individual reported was calculated as a proxy for severity of childhood adversity and classified into four retrospective cohorts (0, 1, 2–3 and 4+ ACES) in order to provide adequate sample sizes for analysis.
