Direct costs had an increasing trend from patients with hepatitis (less than €400/patient-month) to those with cirrhosis (up to €700/patient-month), HCC (up to €2600/patient-month) and OLT (up to €3000/patient-month), with some differences detected within the three aetiological subgroups: within the same disease conditions, patients with HBV infection generated on average the highest direct costs, followed by patients with other aetiologies and then by those with HCV infection.
