This controversial result might indicate that ethnicity might play a critical role in the relationship between coffee consumption and risk of gastric cancer, which may be caused by gene effects, as shown in a genome-wide association study which observed a highly significant association between a mutation on CYP1A2 and coffee ingestion. 42 Recently, a meta-analysis indicated that CYP1A2 gene polymorphisms were significant with gastric cancer risk. 43 Therefore, the meta-analyses should be performed according to different genotypes of CYP1A2.
