BLAST analysis efficiently identifies homologous sequences through highly significant alignments. 3 However, because a high frequency of low significant alignments may reveal stretches of ancestral regions, 21 , 22 we used a low-stringency BLAST strategy to include alignments beyond a significant similarity, a key step in our strategy to identify putative coding sequences with a biological and/or evolutionary significance (Fig. 1 ).
