This study only quantifies the immediate consequences of extreme droughts and heatwaves on carbon uptake, but the long-term impacts are likely to be significant as well because of the possible impacts on ecosystem structure (e.g., enhanced tree mortality during drought episodes), which may take a long time to recover.
